Telstra misrepresent their abilities to supply ADSL, as a check on their website coverage indicates Carindale has excellent coverage (ADSL+ even) and this is confirmed by discussion with their call centre prior to making an order. Even when subsequently they find out the current infrastructure does not support ADSL at an address, they do not update their database to reflect this. (There also seems to be confusion amongst their technicians, as the exchange is not at Mt. Gravatt any more, according to one tech who says he was involved in the instalation of a repeater). A complaint to the Office of Fair Trading for misleading advertising may have some effect. The approach I have taken is to switch to the Virgin wireless system, and though signal strength is marginal (an external antenna may help) leading to spotty performance, the system provides adequate internet speeds, and you get free calls nationwide to landlines.

After reading through some of the problems many of you have been
facing in regards to gaining broadband access in Carindale I am
pleased to advise that the Australian Government’s recently
announced Australia Connected initiative signals the immediate commencement
of short and long-term solutions to the nation’s broadband
problems. The centrepiece of Australia Connected is the Australian
Broadband Guarantee, which seeks to provide all Australians with
access to affordable broadband at a subsidised rate. Put simply,
if you cannot establish an ADSL connection, you are eligible to
receive a wireless or satellite service at a subsidised rate. For
more information on Australia Connected and the Australian Broadband
Guarantee please contact my office directly on phone: (07) 3893
3488 or alternatively contact the Department of Communications,
Information Technology and the Arts on phone: (02) 6271 1000.

I went through the same exercise. I had telstra wireless and found
it rather pricey and misleading. I now have Virgin Broadband which
gives me 4 gig download a month as well as free phone local and
national phone calls all for 60 a month. Virgin send you a wireless
modem that you plug your phone into and has Wi Fi to communicate
to your computer. So far it has worked a treat.

Ian, I went through this exercise late last year. To start
with the end result to save you time....I now have Wireless Broadband.
It works pretty good almost all the time. Ohhh with Telstra by the
way given I have bundled my home and mobile.... I live back up Scrub
Rd and am on the Pine Mtn rd exchange but suffered the same response....not
enough infrastructure but it will come if demand warrants....the
problem is most people want a solution and move on so demand never
builds up as such. A work colleague of mine who lives not between
your locality and mine and whom was also on your exchange had the
same experience and needed hard wired based broadband as opposed
to wireless which I defaulted to. She took up the issue with Ross
Vasta and she has now got proper hardlined adsl into her home....took
a couple of months but she got it. Vasta has been promoting the
wireless solution in his tax payer funded propoganda bulletin and
the fed govt has been throwing money at Vasta electorate for broadband
issues...check out his website for an update or link. Anyway all
providers pretty much indicate that they can provide a service and
put you through the process to only offer wireless.... It works
even though you have to pay $250 for a modem etc....one word of
caution is that if you are in a bad wireless signal area...ie hilly
etc...you might need an external aerial. Don't wait for Telstra
as they don't really want hard wired infrastructure expenditure
when a wireless solution is cheaper to deploy. Best of Luck.

I live in the Carindale Oaks Estate and have been trying
for the past 18 months to have ADSL connected through many providers
including Telstra. On every occasion to date I have been told that
we are on a high gain pair and that there is insufficient lines
in the Mt Gravatt exchange servicing our area. However I am told
to try again soon as the exchange may get upgraded if enough people
apply for ADSL in the area. Is anyone else having
the same issue?? I am absolutely disgusted that Telstra cannot supply
me current technology in an area that is not 10 years old. I'm also
tired of Telstra blaming the developers for not laying enough cable
when developing the land for housing. I want Telstra, who own the
infrastructure, to fix the problem and I want it done now! I've
already waited 18 months on the promise it may be done soon.
