Commitment for Carina Community: Bligh
Deputy Premier, Treasurer and Minister
for State Development, Trade & Innovation
The Honourable Anna Bligh
June 3, 2006
Celebrations at the annual Crackerjack Carnival received
an unexpected boost today with the commitment of an additional
$512,500 from the Beattie Government for the construction
of an indoor, heated swimming pool at the Clem Jones Centre
in Carina.
Deputy Premier Anna Bligh said the $3
million project would ease pressure on the existing pool
and provide a wonderful aquatic complex for the local community.
Today’s commitment takes the Beattie
Government’s total contribution to $1.5 million.
“The Camp Hill Carina Welfare
Association has been working for the local community and
providing sporting facilities for almost 50 years,”
Ms Bligh said.
“That work is strongly supported
by the Beattie Government and is even more relevant today
as we face the challenges obesity and related health problems
such as heart disease, diabetes and various cancers.
“The Carina-Carindale area is
one of the fastest-growing communities in Queensland, so
this is clearly a project that warrants our support.”
Ms Bligh said the 25m eight-lane, wet-deck
pool would include access ramps, amenities and change rooms
for people with disabilities.
“One of the big advantages of
building an indoor, heated pool is that it will allow the
centre to offer a full range of programs all year round,
from learn-to-swim classes for toddlers through to aqua
aerobics for seniors.
“It will encourage people of all
ages in the local community to discover the many benefits
of getting involved in regular physical activity.”
Ms Bligh said the Beattie Government
was committed to helping young Queenslanders develop to
their full potential both in and out of the classroom.
“The
new pool could well become the early training ground for
future swimming champions like Libby Lenton, Grant Hackett
and Leisel Jones,” she said. |
