Work
starts on $500,000 Carindale bus interchange
Minister for Transport & Main Roads
The Honourable Paul Lucas
July 5, 2006
Construction is due to start today on a $500,000 upgrade
of Carindale Bus Interchange, Transport and Main Roads Minister,
Paul Lucas, said today.
He said the
TransLink project would provide better seating, shelter,
information, accessibility and safety for passengers.
"It will
transform the interchange into a modern facility, making
public transport a more attractive option for local residents,"
Mr Lucas said.
"Work
is scheduled to start on Wednesday and is due for completion
in late August.
"This
is part of the Government's commitment to deliver convenient,
accessible and reliable public transport throughout the
State," Mr Lucas said.
"TransLink
consulted with bus users, Brisbane City Council, Veolia
Transport and Westfield Carindale Shopping Centre management
to plan and design the upgrade.
"Construction
will be undertaken in stages to minimise disruption to bus
services.
"Three
stops at a time will be upgraded, with services temporarily
diverted to other stops at the interchange," Mr Lucas
said.
He said the
new bus interchange station would have:
-improved safety
and accessibility
-more seating
in an improved waiting environment
-real time
passenger information
-a touch screen
information kiosk
-new and improved
signage, including timetables and maps.
Mr Lucas said
that, while the bus stops were being moved temporarily,
timetables would remain the same.
“Every
effort is being made to avoid inconvenience to passengers
during construction, and TransLink will ensure that passengers'
needs are met.
"This
upgrade is evidence of the State Government's commitment
to providing better public transport for Carindale residents,
and South East Queensland in general," he said.
Mr Lucas said
the project was one component of a $12 million, four year
program under the TransLink Network Plan to improve bus
stop and station facilities throughout South East Queensland.
